The plates are clamped together in a frame between a fixed head plate (or head) H and a movable head plate (or follower) F, the clamping action being carried out by the tie bolts T. The plates and follower are suspended on a earner bar (or top bar) B1 and guided by a guide bar (or bottom bar) B2, while the head plates carry ports (C) which line up with the plate ports and which can be fitted with bushes or nozzles for coupling to the connecting pipework. These nozzles are connected to the appropriate liquid supply lines in a manner that normally ensures that the flow through the exchanger is basically counter-current.
