3.3.8 Calculation of shell-side heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop
J. Taborek
In this section we convert the ideal tube bank-based αi and Δpbi to the realistic flow conditions of a segmentally baffled exchanger.
A. Shell-side heat transfer coefficient, αs
Based on the ideal tube bank-calculated coefficients αi in Section 253, we determine now the actual shell-side coefficient αs (W/m2 K), using the correction factors for nonidealities of baffled flow as determined in Section 252.
\[\label{eq1} \alpha_{s} = \alpha_{i}\left(J_{c}, J_{i}, J_{b}, J_{r}, J_{s}\right) = \alpha_{i}\left(J_{\rm tot}\right)\tag{1}\]
where | Jc | = | the segmental baffle window correction, Equation 252.20 or Figure 252.7 |
Jl | = | the baffle leakage correction factor, Equation 252.23 or Figure 252.9
Jb | = | the bypass correction factor, tube bundle to shell, Equation 252.25 or Figure 252.10
Jr | = | the laminar heat transfer correction factor for adverse temperature gradient, applicable for Res < 100 Equation 252.29 or Figure 252.12
Js | = | the nonequal inlet/outlet baffle spacing correction factor, applicable only if such differences exist; see Equation 252.36 or Figure 252.13. |
