3.3.12 Longitudinal Flow in Tube Bundles with Grid Baffles

A. Characteristics of longitudinal flow

There are two fundamental modes of flow on the outside of tube bundles:

  1. crossflow, perpendicular to the tubes;
  2. longitudinal flow, parallel to the axis of the tubes.

Flow in shell-and-tube heat exchangers with cross baffles will have generally some components of both flow types. With segmental baffles crossflow is predominant but with multi-segmental baffles, longitudinal flow is a major component. A different type of baffle is discussed here, termed the “grid” or “rod” baffle, with which the shell operates essentially in longitudinal flow, interrupted only by a grid of rods or strips which support the tubes against sagging.
